With over 40 museums and foundations, Turin is a revelation to adults and children, guiding every visitor towards the discovery of its incredible collections – some of the most popular museums are the Royal Palace to which is attached the Armoury, the Galleria Sabauda, the GAM – Civic Gallery of Modern Art – and the National Museum of Cinema.
In addition to these there are the Museo Egizio, the recent MAO – Museum of Oriental Art, the Museum of the Holy Shroud, and the Borgo e la Rocca Medieovale museum site. Within the confines of Palazzo Madama there is the Civic Museum of Ancient Art, while the Scrigno building by Renzo Piano contains the Pinacoteca Giovanni e Marella Agnelli and the Basilica of Superga shelters the Royal Tombs of the Savoy Family.


Outside the city there are the Castle of Rivoli with its Museum of Contemporary Art, the Reggia di Venaria and the Castle of Racconigi. Other treasures are the Ducal Castle of Agliè in Canavese, and the Sacra di San Michele at the mouth of the Val Susa.

The royal holiday residence of Carlo Alberto, this 17th century Guarinidesigned castle was extended and renovated during the 1800s by Ernest Melano, Pelagio Palagi and Xavier Kurten.

Work began in 1659 requested by Duke Carlo Emanuele II; the layout designed by Amedeo di Castellamonte was completed in 1675 consisting of a village, the palace and the gardens. The imposing baroque palace with its vast gardens represents one of the most signifi cant examples of the magnifi cence of the architecture and art of the 17th and 18th centuries.
