This much-venerated painting from the ancient Basilica of St. Pietro in Roma is today the altarpiece of the homonymous chapel in the Sacred Vatican Grottoes.
The painting shows the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus standing upright and in the position of blessing: the Virgin gently reclines her face towards the jovial face of her Son, without, however, taking her eyes off the faithful who are turned towards her.
The painting is attributed to Antoniazzo Romano and his workshop (between 1460 and 1510).
Always venerated in St. Pietro’s, it has never left the Vatican Basilica in the course of its centuries-old history.
