The dossier exhibition titled “Portraits in Gold and Silver” is on display in the Atelier Hall of Madama Palace. It presents a gallery of reliquary busts dating from the fourteenth to the early sixteenth centuryThey come from almost all the Piemonte dioceses and portray saints associated with local devotion and specific local churches’ names. The exhibition also includes a few pieces from Switzerland and Haute-Savoie.
The busts, documented as early as the 11th century as containers for the relics of specific saints’ skulls, are effectively portraits crafted by master goldsmiths, usually in copper or gilded silver, and frequently adorned with precious stones, coloured glass and enamel.
