WORLD PRESS PHOTO EXHIBITION 2021

CULTURE & TRADITION
-
The winning photograph of the World Press Photo 2021 is the embrace between Rosa Luzia Lunardi, 85, and the nurse Adriana Silva from Costa Souza in the Viva Bem nursing home, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The picture, taken on August 5th, 2020 by the Danish photographer Mads Nissen, is an image linked to the pandemic that has turned the world upside down, but which captures the emotion of a small return to normality here, thanks to the “tent of hugs”.

Since 1955, thousands of photojournalists - this year 4,315 for a total of 74,470 pictures - from the major international publications such as National Geographic, BBC, CNN, Le Monde, El Pais have been competing for the title in the various categories of the competition which then becomes an exhibition set up in over 120 cities in 50 countries: this year too Torino hosts the national preview, at Palazzo Madama from May 7th to August 22nd.

In addition to the World Press Photo of the Year 2021, the World Press Photo Story of the Year 2021 was also awarded, an award that goes for the first time to an Italian, Antonio Faccilongo from Roma, with a feature story for Getty Reportage entitled Habibi ("My Love"). Two other Italians are also protagonists: first prize in the Stories - Unexpected News section for Lorenzo Tugnoli from Ravenna and for the Tuscan Gabriele Galimberti for Series of Portraits, reportage made for National Geographic.
