Second appointment at the Oratorio di San Filippo Neri in Turin, for the ’Armonie della sera’ concert season, the great music in the enchanting places of Italy, now in its 18th edition, on the evening of Friday 2 December 2022. The protagonist will be pianist Francesco Attesti. A captivating and highly demanding programme monographically dedicated to Bach’s Goldberg Variations BWV 988. A true macrocosm, an absolute masterpiece in the art of variation, a milestone, and not only in Bach’s production, but also in the entire keyboard production. In fact, their great structural value, the unattainable compositional technique, the ability to touch every expressive possibility of the harpsichord, and the executive technique required make them a true reference point also for their emotional content and overall scope, not a mere exercise in style. Composed between 1741 and 1745 and dedicated to Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, at that time serving in Dresden as Count von Bruhl’s chapel master, they were conceived as a modular architecture of 32 pieces, arranged according to mathematical patterns and symmetries that give them such cohesion and continuity that they have no equal in the history of music. Together with the Art of Fugue BWV 1080 they can be considered the pinnacle of Bach’s experiments in music for fretted instruments. An introductory conversation by the Turin musicologist Attilio Piovano will propel the concert.
