DI PIETRA E FERRO: 150 ANNI DEL TRAFORO DEL FREJUS

CULTURE & TRADITION
-
150 years ago, the world’s first railway tunnel through a mountain range was inaugurated on 17 September at Bardonecchia and Modane; three days of festivities celebrated this historic step in European transportation links. TELT, the public promoter of the Turin-Lyon project, and the National Museum of the Italian Risorgimento are taking a journey through that history: Palazzo Carignano in Turin, home to the Museum and the Subalpine Parliament, which in 1857 approved the project, is opening the exhibition "Of stone and iron. 150 years of the Fréjus Tunnel". The exhibition brings together documents, illustrations, photos and lithographs from TELT’s historical collection and original evidence from the Museum’s archives: all this material reconstructs the main stages of what in 1871 was, together with the cutting of the Suez isthmus, one of the two great works of the 19th century, the first major binational construction site.  The exhibition "Of stone and iron: 150 years of the Frejus Tunnel", in two languages, Italian and French, like the construction site it narrates, can be visited using the Museum’s entrance ticket until 1 November 2021.
