1930s. Donna Concetta and her husband Ferdinando are porters in a building in the centre of Naples. Their only daughter Sofia had gone to live in London 15 years earlier, to ward off the dangers of the First World War, and is unaware of their miserable condition: in fact they make her believe she belongs to the nobility.
