This then leads the way to Alessandria along a route that takes across the city streets to discover a welcoming city where you can take a stroll among historic buildings and excellent crafts shops, have an aperitif in the small squares and take a stop to taste the delicious pastries. Alessandria was the birthplace of many important personalities from the world of culture, which includes Umberto Eco, and is also the hat capital: it was here that, in 1857, Giuseppe Borsalino launched his first workshop. A "Borsalino" would go on to become the inseparable companion of Humphrey Bogart, Gary Cooper, Anthony Quinn, Alain Delon and also Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Robert Redford or even Warren Beatty, Federico Fellini, Paul Newman, Alberto Sordi and Vittorio Gassman. In the Hall of Samples of Borsalino Palace, the Museum, a tribute to the fine manufacturing art, contains the samples of all the hats made up to the present time: about 2000 hats of every different kind, picked from the most significant of the company's production and its aesthetic and cultural heritage, are placed in the historic cabinets designed by Arnaldo Gardella. In Piazza della Libertà there are the Palace of Post Office with the mosaic by Gino Severini, the Town Hall and the Provincial Council at Ghilini Palace; in Via Guasco the small Church of Santa Maria del Carmine, the Church of Beata Vergine Assunta and Guasco Palace, home to the Carlo Carrà Gallery; just beyond is Santa Maria di Castello, heart of the medieval Borgo Rovereto, already mentioned in documents in 1107. Lastly you leave the town along Via Mazzini, towards the Forlanini Bridge where you cross the Tanaro river.
