Leonardo’s botany. A meeting with botany in the garden

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo Da Vinci, Palazzo Madama proposes an itinerary by the botanist Valeria Fossa that will illustrate with plants and flowers of the medieval garden some of the reflections collected by the great Tuscan artist through the careful observation of nature and the adoption of an experimental method.During the visit the advanced hypotheses formulated in da Vinci’s Treatise on Painting will be presented to explain the nutritional mechanisms and lymphatic structure of plants, the arrangement of branches and leaves according to precise and consistent geometric models, and finally the radial growth of the trunk of trees that Leonardo describes in his clear Tuscan language, having understood the close relationship between growth and external environmental conditions: "The rings of the sawn tree branches show the number of years it has lived (...) and which years were wet or dry, on the basis of their greater or smaller size”.
