Borgo Campidoglio is one of the most charming neighborhoods in Torino, located north of the city center. Known for its historic architecture and vibrant spirit, this district exemplifies how the city successfully blends tradition and modernity.
Established in the late 19th century during a period of significant urban expansion, it was designed to accommodate an emerging bourgeois class, featuring elegant Liberty-style houses, well-kept squares, and pedestrian alleys. Its urban layout, with wide tree-lined streets, reflects the trends of the time and contributes to a tranquil atmosphere. Today, it is a lively, inclusive neighborhood with active communities and associations: markets, cultural events, festivals, artisan workshops, restaurants, and shops make it a pleasant place to live or to spend a day strolling through its tree-lined streets.
Two elements make it unique and recognizable: the majestic Parco della Tesoriera, an oasis of relaxation with fountains and gardens surrounding a historic villa, and the Museo di Arte Urbana (Museum of Urban Art).
Today, we take you on a walk through this open-air museum with the Instagramers of Torino and Piedmont.
What was a “town within the city” in the mid-1800s, primarily inhabited by artisans and workers, became home to the @museoarteurbana in the 1990s, the first open-air contemporary art museum in a metropolitan center. The MAU comprises around 200 works, created in collaboration with local residents, adorning facades, shutters, and benches, forming a true “Campidoglio gallery” in the open air.
With @igerstorino and @igerspiemonte, we wandered through the streets of the neighborhood, and here are some of the most iconic murals:
