Abbey
In the early 13th century a community of Carthusian monks settled in a valley sheltered by the Villarfocchiardo mountains, building the Monte Benedetto monastery. The monastic order was founded in 1084 by San Bruno in Chartreuse in France and had been gradually expanding. The site chosen for building the Monastery was not by chance, but corresponds to the ideal of the Carthusian "desert", a secluded place to live in solitude, praying and meditation.
