Having left San Germano Vercellese, follow the signs and keep going for a few kilometres along the dirt road, in the middle of the rice fields, skirting the southern part of the Olcenengo territory. This leads to the estate of Castellone and then continues in the direction of the small Church of Santa Maria del Cammino, close to Cascine di Strà (whose name, deriving from strata, recalls the ancient Francigena roadway). Proceeding between the rice fields, Montonero is quickly reached, now an hamlet of Vercelli but at one time a late medieval grangia (14th-15th century) of which can be seen the remains of the gate, the towers and the living quarters. The chief town can be seen drawing ever closer.
