Turin is best-known from an architectural point of view for its baroque style, which from the eighteenth century characterised it as the European capital.
It is sufficient to raise your eyes to admire the masterpieces of the great artists and architects of the time - Guarino Guarini, Filippo Juvarra, Ascanio Vitozzi … who worked for the Savoy dynasty, celebrating their splendours with original, elegant and opulent works.
The baroque walk is concentrated in the centre and wanders away from it, then triumphs again outside the city where the royal family built their country residences and hunting lodges. You must not miss the Palazzo Reale and Palazzo Madama in piazza Castello, and not far away, Palazzo Carignano, the home of the Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento Italiano, the massive cupola of the Church of San Lorenzo, the Santuario della Consolata, and the Church of San Filippo Neri, with its spacious and luminous interior. There are numerous baroque palaces: Palazzo dal Pozzo della Cisterna, Palazzo Cavour, Palazzo Lascaris di Ventimiglia, the University buildings and the town hall, Palazzo di Città. It will be a pleasure to admire the elegance of these structures that, while audacious in style, show perfect harmony of shape and colour, now returned to their original splendour after skilled refurbishment. Amongst the Royal Residences, the highlights are the Castle of Valentino and Villa della Regina, then leaving the city the Castle of Rivoli, which houses the Museum of Contemporary Art, the royal hunting lodge, Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi, with the museum of historical art and furnishings and the Reggia di Venaria, at present the object of a major restoration and development project.
